Shop Wild-Caught Domestic Gulf Shrimp
Our wild-caught Gulf shrimp is sourced from the Gulf of Mexico. This specific product is domestic, head-off, shell-on, individually quick frozen, and described as all natural and chem-free.
Available shrimp counts can change according to current inventory, so check the product page for the size currently available. Gulf shrimp works well for grilling, shrimp scampi, pasta, seafood boils, and skillet recipes.
For more information about domestic shrimp, read our guide to wild USA shrimp .
What Is IQF Shrimp?
IQF means individually quick frozen. Each shrimp is frozen separately rather than being frozen together in one solid block. This makes it easier to remove the portion you need while leaving the remaining shrimp frozen.
Our raw IQF white shrimp is shell-off, peeled and deveined, with the tail left on. It is sold frozen in a two-pound bag and is listed with Asia as its harvest area.
Our cooked IQF shrimp is a 21/25 count product listed with Asia as its harvest area. It is already cooked and can be thawed and served for shrimp cocktail, salads, wraps, cold platters, or quick pasta dishes.
Raw, Cooked, Prepared, or Block-Frozen Shrimp?
The best shrimp option depends on your recipe, preparation time, and preferred format:
- Raw IQF shrimp: A convenient choice for grilling, sautéing, frying, scampi, pasta, curries, tacos, and stir-fries.
- Cooked IQF shrimp: Best when you want shrimp that can be thawed and served with minimal preparation.
- Wild Gulf shrimp: Choose this product when you specifically want wild-caught, domestic, shell-on Gulf shrimp.
- Prepared coconut shrimp: Our coconut shrimp is a breaded 16/20-count product from Vietnam. Because it is a prepared food, review its complete ingredient, allergen, and cooking information on the product page.
- Block-frozen shrimp: The five-pound shell-on shrimp block is intended for larger quantities. Available shrimp sizes and countries of origin vary by the selected product variant and current availability.
How Shrimp Count and Size Work
Shrimp sizes are commonly shown as a count per pound. The count tells you approximately how many shrimp make up one pound. In general, a lower count means larger shrimp, while a higher count means smaller shrimp.
- U-15: Fewer than 15 shrimp per pound, indicating very large shrimp.
- 16/20: Approximately 16 to 20 shrimp per pound and suitable for grilling, appetizers, and presentation.
- 21/25: Approximately 21 to 25 shrimp per pound and useful for shrimp cocktail, pasta, scampi, and general cooking.
- 26/30 and higher: More shrimp per pound, often suitable for stir-fries, salads, tacos, fried rice, and pasta.
How to Thaw Frozen Shrimp Safely
The safest method is to thaw frozen shrimp gradually in the refrigerator. For faster thawing, keep the shrimp in a sealed, leak-proof package and place it in cold water. Change the water as needed to keep it cold, and cook seafood promptly after using the cold-water thawing method.
Do not leave frozen shrimp on the counter to thaw. Follow any product-specific preparation or cooking instructions printed on the packaging or provided on the product page.
How to Tell When Raw Shrimp Is Cooked
Raw shrimp should be cooked until its flesh becomes firm, pearly, and opaque. Avoid overcooking because shrimp can quickly become tough. Fully cooked shrimp only needs to be thawed or warmed gently, depending on how you plan to serve it.
